Trying to stay on top of everything that is going on in Madison? LWV of Wisconsin's Legislative Committee meets bi-weekly to keep a watchful eye on bills pending in the state legislature. Each piece of legislation is carefully reviewed and committee members vote to approve or oppose the legislation based on League positions. We want to amplify this valuable resource for our members. Critical issues from fair maps to UW funding and salaries to mental health support and anti-discrimination bills are currently on the state legislative docket. Act now to tell Senators Baldwin and Johnson, and Representative Gallagher that our farmers need to have climate-smart agriculture conservation programs and technical assistance for those conservation programs fully funded by the 2023 Farm Bill. Farmers rely on these Farm Bill conservation programs to help them make their farms more resilient and productive. But these programs can only help farmers if they are funded.

Over the past few years, Congress has cut funding for conservation programs; the one-time funding in the IRA helped to fill the gap. The IRA funds are meant to supplement conservation funding in the Farm Bill, not replace them. Click on headline for more details.

In May Outagamie County Board Supervisor Tim Hermes, Little Chute, made disparaging comments about transgendered people, and our League issued an action alert to members to contact their supervisors to express their concern.
The Outagamie County Board held a special meeting on June 6 to vote on censuring Supervisor Hermes. Our League spoke at that meeting using our Diversity Equity and Inclusion mission to stand in solidarity with our transgendered community members. Click on headline to read our statement

Elections education is a key part of establishing election security and integrity. Elections 101 is a four-part video series that explains how elections are carried out in Wisconsin. The goal is to: a) create better awareness and understanding of how election administration works in our state and b) through that understanding, establish more trust in the process.

Each of the four videos is about 6 minutes long explores various aspects of elections administration in Wisconsin. The videos and accompanying lesson plans are intended to be used in high school classrooms as a part of civics education, and also are available to the general public here and in many other places.

A July 28 article that appeared in The Post-Crescent concerning candidate forums for the 19th State Senate District included a comment by Rachael Cabral-Guevara indicating why she did not participate in the League of Women Voters forum. LWV of Appleton-Fox Cities and LWV of Winnebago County jointly drafted a Letter to the Editor to set the record straight concerning what the League means when we say we are nonpartisan.
